Space and grandeur are the name of the game in this well-established neighborhood. Called Lower Tuckahoe, this subdivision is developed on historic land in Eastern Goochland County, Virginia and is located just minutes outside of Richmond. There are a total of approximately 135 homes in Lower Tuckahoe, which was platted in the late 1960s. The first homes in the community were built right after platting, yet the numbers grew the quickest during the 1970s and 1980s. There has been further development since that time, with some of the most recent homes being built after the year 2000.
Even though the construction in Lower Tuckahoe has been spread out over many years, the look of the homes remains consistent. The architecture in this community is undeniably traditional, with Georgian and Colonial styles reigning supreme. In fact, the original developers of the subdivision were so serious about maintaining the historic look of the community that there is a passage in the covenants and restrictions that reads: “… that the ‘general appearance of homes and outbuildings shall be of Williamsburg, Georgian, Country, New England or Farm-type architecture’.”
As drivers wind and weave through the narrow roadways of Lower Tuckahoe, the quiet charm of the area is apparent. Tall trees soar above the rooftops of the neighborhood’s 2- and 3-story homes, and beautiful landscaping accents the properties in all the best ways. The layout of the subdivision is spacious, with lots ranging from 1 acre to over 15 acres in size. With this much land, a sense of seclusion is available without compromising a desirable community feel. Many of the houses are set back from the road and surrounded by trees, which means that the properties are protected from onlookers from the road. Cul-de-sac-capped streets and a minimal flow of traffic makes this subdivision a wonderful place for families.
With the James River running past the planned community, many of the homes benefit from water views. Further, this puts residents of Lower Tuckahoe within easy reach of water activities, including but not limited to boating, fishing, swimming and kayaking. Between the water and the woods, this country neighborhood boasts an outdoor-friendly feel and an undeniable charm. Perhaps the most appealing factor of Lower Tuckahoe is the wide range of price points. Buyers find a variety of homes in the $500,000 to $600,000 price range; however, some of the most impressive properties in the subdivision fetch well-over $2 million.
Area History
The land on which Lower Tuckahoe is built dates back hundreds of years to the times of Thomas Jefferson. It was in this area that the Tuckahoe Plantation sat. This massive farm included more than 25,000 acres of prime central Virginia land, some of which is the area Lower Tuckahoe now sits upon. There is plenty of centuries-old land in this region; however, what makes this area so special is the fact that Mr. Jefferson began his education in the one-room school house of the plantation. In fact, the school house was entered as a National Historic Landmark in 1969, as were some of the remaining outbuildings of the plantation.
It is a nod to the intricate nature of this period’s architecture that Lower Tuckahoe is based around. While many of the houses in the subdivision feature custom designs that appeal to lovers of classical elements and great character, there are some homes in the subdivision that are replica designs of historical homes. No matter which option residents choose, antique features such as hardwood floors, decorative trim, shiplap, interior French doors and stunning ceiling details take everyday living to the next level.
